The Club is situated in McLevin Park at 180 McLevin Avenue (Off Markham Rd. 1 light north of Sheppard Ave.E.,between Markham Rd.& Neilson Rd). There are 3 lit courts; parking; shared use of the Club House & easy access to public transportation. The Club operates from mid April to late October. Public hours are Saturday and Sunday only from 6pm-11pm.

2009 Fees:
Adult 20+) - $60 April-May 31st: $65 from June 1st
Intermediate (16-19)- $25 April-May 31st: $30 from June 1st
Junior (6 -15) - $20 April-May 31st: $25 from June 1st
Senior (60+) - $40 April-May 3st: $55 from June 1st
Family (max.2 adults) - $140 April-May 31st: $150 from June 1st
Guest fee is $5 per person per session(subject to court availability)

Discounts: Register by May 16, 2009 and take advantage of the "earlybird" discount. Also, if you bring in 2 new members before June 30, 2009 your membership is free (adults must bring adults to qualify for this discount).

Tennis Social Events & Lessons

McLevin Park hosts regular social events centered around the game we all love to play. Events include:

BBQ and Breakfast Roundrobins (weekends): McLevin Park hosts monthly BBQ, corn-roasts, pot-lucks and/or breakfast tournament socials. Members are welcome to invite non-member guests and partake in non-competitive doubles tennis matches. A small fee applies to cover cost of food and refreshments (those contributing to the food/refreshments do not have to pay). McLevin Park is a very culturally diverse club and international pot-lucks are very popular here, where you can sample some of the best food from across the globe, prepared by our culinary-savvy members.

Canada Day Roundrobin (holiday): Each year McLevin hosts a Canada Day tournament, which usually includes a BBQ, pot-luck or breakfast. Members are encouraged to come out sporting red and white attire to celebrate this nations birthday, and play our 9th most popular national pastime...tennis! Usually non-competitive doubles matches. A $5 usually applies.

House League (Mondays): doubles competition from 7-9pm for 10-12 weeks starting in late May 2008.

Tennis Lessons & Clinics: The club also offers tennis lessons coached by an OTA certified instructor for adults and juniors, as well as doubles tennis clinics. We offer group as well as private lessons at a fee and FREE lessons for juniors (under 16yrs at Jan.1/08) on Sundays June 8, 15, 22 & 29, 3pm-4pm. A1 Team - STF 2008

News and updates on the adventures of McLevin's first ever STF team at the A1 level:

Week 10-11: With both captains vacationing in cottage country and two other key players absent from the line-up, McLevin did not fair that well against Agincourt, losing 8-2 overall. The only bright spot was the addition of a new talent to the team that with his partner easily picked up the sole 2 points for McLevin. The lopsided loss put McLevin from 4th to 7th place, and relegation is once again a concern. This week's match against #1 Curran Hall should be interesting.

Week 9: McLevin just came off a 5-5 result against Wishing Well. Wishing Well is a team that's never been lower than A1 division. After they levelled the score (not without controversy) with a strong McLevin roster, Wishing Well was clearly happy with the split. They even offered to split the points of the rained-out match from week 2 that initially they insisted on playing at a later date, expecting easy points. There's no such thing as easy points against McLevin! We currently sit in 4th place in A1 division.

Week 3-8: Slowly but surely the fledgeling A1 team is coming into form. We're starting to beat some teams, but still lag behind the run-away leaders. We currently sit in 3rd place out of 8. As captain, I'm getting a bit tired of the top teams patronizingly telling me how good our team is right after they beat us in a close contest. Personally, I can't wait for the day when our bitter opponents walk off the courts without saying a word. That's when I'll know we've truly made it!

Week 2: McLevin's second match of the season is tomorrow May 21, against Wishing Well, also former champs at the A1 level. If McLevin survives these first few matches, they're looking good for the rest of the year. Much like Cliff Fletcher, McLevin's captain has had to do some serious wheelin' and dealin' to acquire new talent while managing existing contracts with no trade clauses in them. At least Fletch doesn't also have to play in the contests.

Week 1: The rain gods intervened and granted McLevin a stay in execution against Kiwaniwood on May 14, 2008. The relief was short however because team Kiwaniwood (as former champs) see McLevin (A1 newcomers) as easy pickings and refused to simply split the points. Instead, the postponed matches will be played in two sessions on Sunday May 25th and Monday May 26th. "Our strategy is simple" Said McLevin's A1 captain. "We'll hit 'em with everything we've got in the first session, and hope they cave and agree to split the points on the second day instead of playing it out...little knowing that we'll be completely out of amo by then...muahaha".

Achievements.... Challenges
If you're looking for real competitive tennis, both singles and doubles, McLevin Park is the place to be. McLevin is home to many crafty veterans of the game as well as some of the best young players in the city, several of whom compete at the provincial level as well as at the Canadian nationals. McLevin has also been the developing ground for a number of junior tennis players who have secured tennis scholarships to further their education at universities in the US.

TOURNAMENTS

Club Championships
This is the year-ending tennis event where members compete for a trophy in singles and doubles for all age groups:-men's singles, men's doubles, ladies singles, ladies doubles and seniors mixed.

Adult Ladder Competion
Competitive 3-set singles matches arranged by the participants at their leisure, with the goal of improving their individual ranking at the club. The results of the competition are used to determine seedings for Club Championship draws. Participation is free but only open to existing club mambers.

Open Tournament:

McLevin occasionally hosts open tournaments for fund-raising purposes for which entry fees do apply. In 2005 a 16-player men's singles tournament was hosted, drawing players from all over the city, with cash prizes for the top 2 players.

Ladies Invitational Tournament

Held in July and is semi-competitive doubles, including bbq and prizes. Entry fees apply.

OTA Tennis Fair

A fun, interactive tennis event coordinated by Ontario Tennis Association personel, includes skills testing, mini matches, clinics, prizes & BBQ. Fee includes OTA T-shirt.

Leagues

The Scarborough Tennis Federation (STF) organizes interclub leagueplay for adults and juniors in the community clubs in Scarborough. The league runs from Mid-May to Mid August. Teams play once per week, at home and away matches. The format in the adult league is doubles, regulation 2 set matches. In the junior league the categories are under 12, under 14, under 16 and under 18. McLevin is home to three of the most successful STF teams in recent years and we hope to continue that trend in 2008. We will be fielding 1 adult team in the A1 Division, 1 adult team in the B2 Division and 1 team in the Boys B Division (girls are allowed to play on this team).

New players are always welcome to try out for a spot on the teams: tryouts will be held in late April and the first week of May. A1 league matches will start Wednesday May 14, 2008 and every Wednesday until August 13, 2008. B2 league matches will start Thursday May 15, 2008 and every Thursday until August 14, 2008. Junior Boys B league matches will start on Saturday May 3, 2008 and every Saturday morning until June 21, 2008. Teams will play equal number of home and away matches.

We are always looking for strong players to add to our rosters, especially women players for the adult teams. So ladies if you are interested in some good competition and fun tennis, MPTC is the place to be - both adult teams need female players. Please contact us at mclevinpark@hotmail.com.

2007 Accomplishments

McLevin Park has once again seen a great year in STF competition. In 2007, McLevin's A2 STF Team came in 2nd in the division, earning a promotion to the A1 division in 2008. The A1 division is the highest level of team tennis in Scarborough, and after several years at the A2 level, this will be McLevin's first year in A1. McLevin's C1 team has also been granted promotion into B2.

Tennis Prize Money Inequality

The U.S. Open recently became the first major to pay equal amounts of prize money to the winners of the Men's and Women's draws. In attempting to create equality, many would argue they've actually created more inequality. One simple reason, women's matches are best of 3 sets, while at majors, men's matches are best of 5 sets. This creates a scenario where male players will potentially put in 40% more work into the same tournament and get paid the same amount of prize money as women players. Is that equality?

The counter-argument to that is of course that the presence of women players at such tournaments attracts just as many ticket buyers (if not more) as the male players. Thus, despite playing fewer sets, the ladies are earning their share of the money for the industry (not to mention the fact that they often spend just as much time on the court as the men, since they have all those never-ending rallies).
